We are delighted to announce that our alumna, Claudia Matek, Class of 2020, won the 2021 Eckersley’s Art Prize

We are delighted to announce that our alumna, Claudia Matek, Class of 2020, won the 2021 Eckersley’s Art Prize for her artwork titled ‘Diaspora’, a major prize in the ACU’s Clancy Art Awards. Congratulations Claudia.

The ACU Clancy Prize is awarded annually and is open to all Sydney Catholic School secondary students. The artworks must be of a religious or sacred nature and are based on a theme each year. This year’s theme was Celebrating 200 Years of Catholic Education in Australia. The prize was awarded at ACU’s Strathfield campus in May 2021.

Artist’s statement: “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD”. My artwork Diaspora, depicts my grandfather’s roots as a farmer living in the rural hills of Croatia and the deep connection he felt for his beloved homeland. The wrinkles and folds which tattoo his face are testimonies of his strength, resilience and integrity. With my grandfather as a role model, and the strong Catholic faith he has instilled in me, I try to uphold these values in my life. Jesus often gave voice to the silenced, and although my grandfather cannot speak English, through my art I am attempting to translate and celebrate how important my grandfather’s character and faith is to my family and myself.”
